Prof David Faiman, Zenith Solar
Professor David Faiman, Head of the Ben-Gurion National Solar Energy Research Center and developer of a new solar cell that can produce over one thousand times more electric power than a conventional photovoltaic or PV, states:
‘The achievement is that we separate out the collection function of a photovoltaic cell to the light conversion to electricity function. When we collect the light, instead of using a huge area of solar cells, we use an equal area of cheap glass mirrors and they are curved in such a way as to concentrate the light onto a very small solar cell, the size of just one cell, and in this way you concentrate the light a thousand times and you can get a thousand times more power out of a small cell.’
This is truly an amazing development with several practical applications.

There are dozens (maybe hundreds@?) of companies around the world working on concentrated photovoltaic solar technology. It’s been part of the scene too long to call it “amazing” at this point. Not that it’s not cool. I’m sure it will be a significant part of our energy mix in years to come.

The claim you can get 1000 times more energy output than a regular PV is misleading. If you build a bunch of reflecting dishes on say an acre of land of course you are going to get more power because you are using more land area and equipment to get this energy. Concentrating light has been used for a long time. What would be most beneficial would be dramatic increases in efficiency
There are many of companies around the world doing on solar technology but Isreal is very developed and has been used for a long time.
